JC, you really ought to start a new topic for this.

So, I do it, here is my original msg :

I have a problem with config files on Linux Ubuntu 5.10
I would like to do a map rotation using everytime.cfg
in armagetron-advanced 0.2.8.1 (not dedicated)

config files (those I found) are located in /etc/armagetron (sym link to /usr/etc/games/armagetronad)
I did not modify settings.cfg, and setup a "MAP_FILE ..." line in autoexec.cfg, which works fine

But when I tried the same in everytime.cfg (which, if I'm right, should load at every round), it does not work at all (I modify it by hand when armag is running, for test)

So here are my questions :
- can the map rotations work in *not* dedicated ?
- what can be wrong with the file (location ?)
- why autoexec.cfg works and not everytime.cfg ?

I have some other questions, but just answer that for the moment
Very Happy

I have not run a server without using dedicated so I'm not sure.
Are you sure you're putting everytime.cfg in the right place?
Does user armagetron have the rights to read it?

autoexec.cfg loads as tronserver is started/restarted only
everytime.cfg is loaded at the end of each round.

The autoexec.cfg works fine, that's why I think I found the right location...
I found no doc on everytime.cfg, but autoexec.cfg is in the armag docs.

Thanks again for help

When I compiled tronserver from source everytime.cfg was in location:

/usr/local/var/games/armagetronad-dedicated/var/everytime.cfg

it certainly needs to be in the var directory, not the config directory.

I guess yours would be /usr/etc/games/armagetronad/var/everytime.cfg

but, since you're not running as server it may be:

/home/username/.armagetronad/var/everytime.cfg

As I said, I've always run server using dedicated.

everytime.cfg is not there by default, you have to create it, make sure you chmod 755 so tron can read it.

Does the non dedicated server even generate logs?

JC, just type MAP_FILE <author>/<category?>/<name>-<version>.aamap.xml
Notice the dash...
So to pratice, say, chico sumo! Very Happy one of the CT wild fortresses, on a local game, type in the console, "MAP_FILE ed/fortress/chico_teamsumo-0.0.3.aamap.xml"

If you want to host your own server for others to play, then do it with the dedicated server, for more reasons then I care to mention. among them you don't have to leave your client running and logged in, which is using your GPU + CPU all the time, and you can renice the server, and you can run the server in a chroot jail, as a different user (with low permission) ei: prevent a cracker from doing to much damage if a major security flaw is found in the code, etc... etc... etc...

If other people are connecting to your server you'll need to host the maps on a web server, and set-up the resource depository too... so don't forget about that... (for a local game you don't have to worry about that).

everytime.cfg was in location:
/usr/local/var/games/armagetronad-dedicated/var/everytime.cfg
it certainly needs to be in the var directory, not the config directory.
I guess yours would be /usr/etc/games/armagetronad/var/everytime.cfg

This is exactly where I put the "everytime.cfg" file
and formerly the autoexec.cfg file which works fine
but, since you're not running as server it may be:
/home/username/.armagetronad/var/everytime.cfg

I tried, too, but it did not work here, even "autoexec.cfg"
everytime.cfg is not there by default, you have to create it, make sure you chmod 755 so tron can read it.

And the file is 644 yet
Maybe I should set 666, so the script can modify the file, but for the moment 644 is enough, I think
By the way, I put 666 and nothing better
When I put autoexec.cfg in /usr/etc/games/armagetronad/, it works
When I put autoexec.cfg in ~/.armagetronad/var, it works and has priority on the one in /usr/etc/games/armagetronad/

Initially, I have no var directory in usr/etc/games/armagetronad/
When I create one, and put either an autoexec.cfg or an everytime.cfg file in it, none is working
So I deleted the var dir I created, and am waiting for some help

thanks

How did you install the game?
.package or from source?
